The main advantage of a portable spot welding machine is that it can bond different kinds of metals – mild steel, aluminum, copper, brass, nickel all the way through tin – with just a press of a button. Through applying continuous pressure and heating the welded spot, portable spot welding Machines are able to fuse multiple metal sheet materials permanently at a time. The word spot (spot) in this welding process refers to the central area of the weld, the area that receives the intense heat and the spot that is hottest when the welder begins welding. The welding spot continues to cool, which results in it forming a strong, durable connection between the different metals.
One particular type of welding method called electric resistance welding (ERW) uses a continuous application of electric current along with a constant buildup of heat throughout the entire process. The spot is continually heated until it reaches a resistance level and begins to collapse, therefore releasing the weld. Because the weld is released when the spot cools, there is not much downtime, allowing for faster production times. In contrast, the mild steel spot usually requires more time to cool before it becomes inert and can be discarded, reducing downtime.
Another main benefit of these welding guns is that they require less continuous welding current than do most hand-held welding equipments. A hand-held welder generally needs three or more passes over the same area to complete one job. This means that a welder must continuously add welding current to keep the welder working at a comfortable pace. There are several portable spot welding guns that feature a rotary hammer that allow for continuous work flow while reducing fatigue on the welder. This combination allows for a welder to be more mobile, finishing jobs faster.
The three-step process of ERW allows for faster turning speeds, but is not without some drawbacks. For example, because the welder must continuously apply welding current to keep the weld going, the welder runs into a “check valve” at the lowest effective weld point, which may prevent excessive flow of current. In addition, it requires continuous monitoring of the welds temperature to ensure that it is not getting too hot. If either of these conditions occur, the welder will have difficulty in completing the weld.
